Re: Can't search the PDF file. (Happier day)
Moral of the story for me (and other FM users): Before importing ANYONE's Word file into FM, from now on, I plan to export to HTML, run through DreamWeaver's strip-out-weird-word-stuff, save, re-import into Word, dump into FM. A highly multi-cultural approach (Adobe/Macromedia/M$). If I don't have DW handy, I'll have the privilege of tweaking the HTML by hand.
There are other applications that have strip-weird-Word-stuff utilities. The one I use on my Mac is usually BBEdit--essentially the same filter as Dreamweaver's, but BBEdit loads faster. I'm still looking for a good Windows weird-Word-stuff stripper, since I really don't want to pay for two Dreamweaver licenses and BBEdit is AFAIK only available for Macs.
One sign that Adobe is listening will be when it takes out that Print to PDF Option on the File Menu.
Actually, it only causes problems if you need particular bells and whistles like searchability. For 95% of the things I use PDFs for---relatively short (2-8 page) sections of docs and individual help screens that need to be approved by non-FM clients---it works quite well.
