Tools: A new Google function for specifically finding definitions
Subject:Tools: A new Google function for specifically finding definitions From:"Hart, Geoff" <Geoff-H -at- MTL -dot- FERIC -dot- CA> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Fri, 24 Oct 2003 13:06:51 -0400
Thought this might prove interesting for anyone who needs to look up the
range of definitions for a variety of words, technical or otherwise, that
might not be in your standard office dictionary:
Google (www.google.com) offers a new feature that lets you focus your search
on definitions. The feature has two different ways you can invoke it. Let's
say you're seeking a definition of the word "word": If you type "define
[word]" (minus the quotes and square brackets, with a space after the word
"define"), you'll get a list of definitions hyperlinked to their source,
followed by the usual list of search results. To eliminate the search
results and just show the definitions, type "define:[word]" (minus the
quotes and square brackets, with a colon but no space after the word
"define"). If you want to search for a phrase (e.g., "elasticity of
demand"), enclose it in double quotes but otherwise use the same syntax.
As usual, pay close attention to the sources of the definitions. Some will
be far more credible than others.

Vah! Denuone Latine loquebar? Me ineptum. Interdum modo elabitur. (Oh! Was I
speaking Latin again? Silly me. Sometimes it just sort of slips
out.)--Anonymous
