TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
There is no competition really. The inquiry you received was offering the
service of forming letters into words, words into sentences and
paragraphs, paragraphs into chapters of a manual (maybe...)
However, you can offer that, plus knowledge of your customers and their
users; knowledge of the technologies you are documenting; knowledge of the
technologies your customers and their users use; knowledge of the
industries you write for.
An overseas editing shop can't offer any of that and I'm sure an astute
employer/client evaluating you vs. them would recognize most if not all of
that. If not, I guess we could all learn more about communicating to
customers about the value we add.
