I'd build the index in Word because Word's indexing is halfway decent, then
print out the doc with the markers showing and re-index it in Quark. You
don't need to know all of Quark, just enough to mark the entries for
indexing. I am assuming that indexing done in Word would not transfer over
to Quark nicely.
Alternatively, you could mark up the document and pass it on to the
art/production people to do insert the index for you, but you'd have to tell
them exactly how to arrange your index entries and sub-entries, and the
other way you get a little experience in Quark. :)
