Thanks very much to all of you. I didn't know about the indexing software you mentioned. I actually would not have used physical index cards. I'm a systems programmer and data modeller too, and would have used something digital; but metaphorically I saw little to distinguish that from the manual and labor-intensive task of running IEBEYEBALL scanning for all those page break changes. ;-)
The artist they hired told me there was no way to tag index entries in quark, which probably means she's not as experienced as I thought. Perhaps I'll suggest RTFM. Meantime I'm researching the Society of Indexers website.
