- Economic model = competetion. Scott McNealy, the president of Sun Microsystems, hates Bill Gates. It seems that he figures if BG can take the browser market away from Netscape and others by giving away IE for free, maybe he (SM) can punch a dent in the MS Office monopoly by opening the source for Sun's StarOffice suite. Open source developers are glad to help ;-)
Open source developers like the challenge of contributing to a project making world-class software. It looks good on a resume and you can pass out samples showing how your efforts work in the real world.
StarOffice can be purchased on CD for less than 100USD.
- Why you can trust it? It ain't Microsoft. The OpenOffice.org team fixes bugs _much_ faster than the team at Redmond. For them, it is a matter of professional pride instead of some bean counter's bottom line.

Subject: Re: Viewing Powerpoint without Powerpoint
I just downloaded the PowerPoint viewer for this project. Thanks for the advice,
folks.
I have two questions about OpenOffice, though:
-What's the economic model, here?
-Why should I trust that this program won't mess up my computer?
