Re: Viewing Powerpoint without Powerpoint
I have one last question: are OpenOffice and MS Word files compatible? If IYou need OpenOffice.org to read the file if you save it in OpenOffice.org format. Or, at least, you need it if you want to read the file easily. OpenOffice.org format is zipped XML, so you could unzip it and read the file as plain text or in a web browser that supports XML. Naturally, though, you wouldn't want to do that if you didn't have to.
create a file in OpenOffice and send it to you, must you also run OpenOffice? In
other words, is it just like MS Word in that regard? Thanks in advance.
Using OpenOffice.org, you can save in MS Office format. In fact, you can set MS Office formats as the default save format if you want. You can also open MS Office files in OpenOffice.org. However, as with any export/import formats, there can be formatting problems, especially with some types of forms and fancier tables. But these problems are no greater than the trouble with different versions of MS Word's normal.dot, and are generally adequate for most business needs.
Another useful feature is that, although VB macros won't run in OpenOffice.org, you can preserve them so that they're still available the next time you open the file in MS Office.
