TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
At least from my company's brief forays into the world of outsourcing,
it was pretty obvious that one still needs project coordinators in the
U.S. Obviously, I can't compete directly with someone that makes 1/3 of
my salary. That wasn't my point. However, I can remain gainfully
employed by coordinating the offshore efforts. Hence, my suggesting
that one should learn another language and learn XML.
I'm unconvinced that Frame and Robohelp and other commercial tools will
be all that useful in the wide-open global market everyone expects. I
think the offshore trend will be to use open-source tools simply because
of cost.
Also, since we're on the subject of other skills, I've taken a turn at
writing mass market books about computing as well as articles for
magazines. It was fun and somewhat profitable, but not nearly as
profitable as full-time technical writing. However, it is a source of
income and any technical writer worthy of the name can do it.
