How to Format, View and Print Mac Word Outlines WITHOUT Bullets or
Numbers!
Fear Not - It Can Be Done!
These instructions are for Macintosh OS9 MS Word 98. I think the basic
concepts are the same for other Mac versions and even MS Word for Windows,
but you'll have to explore, because I haven't tested anything other than
this.
Open a document you have created in Outline format.
01) Change it to Normal View
02) Select All
03) Pull down the Format Menu
04) Select "Bullets & Numbering"
05) Select "Outline Numbered" Tab
06) Select the second top pane - the one to right of "None" at top left
07) Click on the "Customize" button
08) Click on the "More" button
Make the following setting adjustments:
09) Set Number Style to (none)
10) Set Number Position to "Left"
11) Set Link level to style: (no style)
12) Set Follow Number with: "Nothing"
13) Set ListNum field list name: keep/make blank
14) Set Legal style numbering: unchecked
Then for each Level Number
15) Click on Level Number
16) Select All in "Number Format" and delete - make it completely blank
17) Make the values typed into the data fields at "Number postion -
aligned at:" and "Text position - Indent at:" the SAME for each Level
Number. In other words, for each Level Number, you have the same value in
each of these two separate data input fields.
Common values for these positions start with 0" at Level 1 and proceed
upwards in quarter inch intervals. So Level 2 is 0.25", Level 3 is 0.5"
etc. But you can make them whatever you want. And don't worry about the
Preview diagram - it expects numbers at the beginning of each line, and
when they aren't there the Preview Lines don't line up. But your document
will.
These changes will be saved by Word as a format option, so you can use it
on other documents. Now your Outline view will match your Normal/Page
layout view - and PRINT! Enjoy!
