Spoiler for an event midway through the book:
I always liked how this situation got resolved; the government applied
pressure on the school to graduate him, and it turned out that it was easier
to give him a Ph.D. than an Bachelor's. He'd submitted a book to the
university press which they counted as his thesis, decided his coursework
in the various foreign language departments satisfied that requirement, and
since the majority of what'd make up his committee had taken classes with him
or the like, they passed him on the basis of personal experience and reading
his "thesis".
