I understand that Andrew Plato believes that #1 is not the right answer, but I think the choice he poses is false.
It's never going to be the easy choice between a nicely wrapped but useless/smelly/disgusting gift and a messily packaged box full of unadulterated gold.
Rather, it's almost often a choice between:
1. A nicely wrapped but useless gift and
2. A voluminous mess, like, one the size of a barn, in which is buried a solid gold needle of tremendous value. However, in order to find that needle, one most poke with one's bare hands through hundreds of haystacks guarded by lots of angry pigs wallowing in slime and dropping left by the bovines infected with mad cow.
Given THAT kind of a choice, seems to me one might opt for the nicely wrapped package. At least that's easier to dispose of.
