TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Dan...I'm trying to figure out how I would approach this. This may not work for you as different people can pull off different things.
1) Meet with the boss (not his flun...I mean protégé...whatever that is).
2) Ask him straight out
"Boss...for a year, I've been asking to get involved with the documentation effort and have been rebuffed. Now that my worst-case scenario has occurred, what kind of finished documentation am I expected to create in two weeks?"
Bring with you some copies of emails that you've issued in the past on this subject.
3) Hopefully, he'll reply with "What kind do YOU think you can produce?" At that point, it's all negotiation.
