TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Starting with this project, keep track of the number of hours you spend on
each project, along with your measure of various criteria that make one
project more difficult than another in your context. As your project history
grows, you will have the numbers *in your company's context* for how long
projects should take. You can then estimate any future project by plugging
the numbers into your ever-increasingly accurate formula as more projects
get added to your database. Your managers will, I think, respond more to
your numbers, since they will be based on *your* experience, than something
you get from a book or here. If you're in a quick-and-dirty kind of
environment, you can also point out that while a respected industry
authority says 8 hours/page, your actual average is [insert presumably lower
figure].
