I actually do both words and design.
But in my experience, the target audience of most tech writers simply does
not care about this stuff. I have never ONCE had a user or reviewer
comment on the spacing I've used after periods (and I've done it both
ways, depending on the style guidelines I was given, or the guidelines I
myself established). For the record, I prefer 1 space, but am easily
swayed.
If you're doing page layout for QUE or O'Rielly, perhaps this stuff is
pertinent, and worthy of scrutiny and debate.
But if you're frantically cranking out online help or PDF manuals for
software that is hastily developed and released according to strenous
deadlines, while receiving paychecks from a company ever eager to find
ways to cut costs, you've got bigger fish to fry. That's all I'm saying.
