That was my first thought: "on which side of the brackets?"
If she hasn't done so yet, your friend she make sure she knows
exactly what she is *not* supposed to do. An example would be
better than a description in this case.
However, if this editor is the person setting the style rules for
the job, even if the requirement is loony, it is a job requirement.
If your friend can't successfully argue for something else, she
should just do what the job requires.
