Are you on the Mac? I believe the Mac version used to change the
pointer to a blinking silicon chip when Maker thought the document size
bumped up against available memory. Anyway, file size limitations
should be related to your available memory.
You should definitely think about importing your graphics by reference.
That's what that feature is for. It's very stable in Maker, and
everybody uses it. Not only that, but it makes it easier to update your
graphics, should the need arise. Take a new screenshot and save it to
the same name - viola, the new image is in your document.
Best practice? Close all other applications, open the document, and see
if you can convert some of these copied graphics into imported by
reference. As you go, and as you save, the actual file size should
diminish. And Maker can swap the reference images out of memory.
