TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
1. When the job is to communicate, rather than just to write, we want to
tweak the total message that we are conveying, not just the text.
2. Look, feel, fit and finish seem important (especially since we have
been spoiled by WYSIWYG interfaces for years now.)
3. Going to strict mark-up seems like going back to the days of ASCII
characters on green screens. That's uncivilized!
4. We have been trained to organize meaning by organizing the document
structure (outlines, headings, etc.). In our minds, these organizational
structures are visual, not conceptual. If we can't see the differences
in the headings, the differences don't exist.
This message in only partly tongue-in-cheek.
