TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Being somewhat of an old Geezer, I started my technical writing with
TROFF, IBM Script, and eventually really nifty tools such as Scribe,
TeX, and finally Wordstar (remember the famous "dot commands?").
I learned to separate markup from content early on. Semantic markup is
just one step past batch formatting.
At my previous company, many of the writers simply could not make the
transition to semantic markup. We had, unfortunately, gone to great
pains to make Epic into a WYSIWYG editor for paper output. However, we
stopped shipping printed manuals, and PDF was only sent on demand.
HTMLHelp and Java Help were the two primary methods of delivery. We
never did figure a way to break the paper-format mindset. Some of the
writers would never even look at the online versions of their work.
They would print out a paper version, formatted for books, and never go
any further.
