The customer for thousands of jobs/assignments in hundreds of different
fields is "the next step in the process".
Some people find value and fulfilment knowing they are part of ensuring a
greater whole functions correctly. Others need to be touchy feely with the
output. There are jobs and situations to satisfy both personalities.
The professional responsibility of a worker is to know which situation
they prefer and to realise that when the best way forward doesn't match
their preference, it's time to move on.
