Re: Am I a spammer?
I send e-mail to 100 companies asking if they need copyediting
services, am I a spammer? A friend tells me I am, but I have never
heard that doing what I did is considered spam.
He said sending unsolicited, commercial e-mail the way I did was
really spam.
I'm amazed. Is this true?
The definition of spam has continued to broaden as it evolves. There are lots of definitions to choose from. Very few spammers call themselves spammers. Nowadays, spam is defined by the recipient, not the sender. If the recipient thinks it's spam, it's spam.
IMHO, for only 100 messages, you should be cold-calling these people directly, not emailing them.
Ask yourself: If your credit card company sends you a flyer offering to sell you a cheap handbag for three easy payments of $59 billed to your credit card, do you consider that:
1. A helpful notification of a special offer; please send more!
2. Junk mail; please take me off your list
3. "Marketing"
