My internship isn't exactly a tech writing internship, but I am a senior
technical communication student. I work with a marketing and public
affairs office and I have been given a great variety of tasks.
I did begin by copy editing new catalogs and updating the appropriate
indices. I was also given small writing tasks, starting with captions and
moving up to short biographies and more descriptive brochure text. All the
time my supervisors were emphasizing how to write consistently, accurately
and within the preferred style of the company. I have also assisted in
gathering information for new releases, written for an internal
newsletter, worked to create and update web page content. I am a constant
benefit to my department as an extra set of eyes for proofing and one to
politely question the way things have always been done.
The greatest part about my internship is the variety of tasks I am exposed
to, demonstrating the diversity of technical communication. I work with
the director of publications, director of media relations, photographer
and graphic designers. While some take me under their wing more than
others, I am constantly challenged in these different areas.
