TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've been dropping in on this thread occasionally, mainly because the original
question is one that would not now have occurred to me to bring to TECHWR-L.
(I've been on the list off and on for 10 years or so, so that's not to say I
might not have in the past.)
I'd pick what my users seemed to be most used to and go with it. If I got
enough complaints in reviews, I'd consider changing it. And if that was the
only problem with my document, I'd consider myself lucky.
Some things are obviously, glaringly, sore-thumb-sticking-out wrong. Some are
much more a matter of choice and how language is changing. What's
prescriptively correct may look incorrect to your audience, and make YOU look
rigid and unfamiliar with their technology. Learn to pick your battles.
