If recollection serves, much of Will's wordsmithing contributed to the
evolution from Middle English to Modern English, as many words now extant
were created from whole cloth by the Bard himself.
(Of course, I was no English or Linguistics major, and I'm sure the many
pickers of nits on this list will quickly correct me if I'm wrong.)
And on the other foot there are those who'll claim that Bill didn't
write the works of Shakespeare, that "The Stratford Man's" name was a
convenient nom de plume of the True Author. Many think that de Vere,
17th Earl of Oxford, wrote Bill's stuff.
At nearly the same time as Shakespeare the Bible-translation team was
at work building the King James Version. That, too is closer to
Modern than it is to Middle.
