I did indeed give references and permission to ask them anything. They
are former colleagues and can attest to the fact that I was honest and had
great work habits, along with information about my skills.
My concern was that they seemed to be getting permission to ask my
previous employers about my personal life. Frankly, I don't have anything
to hide, but I still can't figure out why they would do that.

The employer I saw did not advertise encryption and I didn't investigate.
I won't give my SS# online, not only because it might end up in cyberspace
but because I don't know who has permission to see it on the other end. I
would indeed agree to a background check when I have an offer in hand.
At one place I interviewed it was a rather new company and when they asked
for a background/credit check I asked to see their finanacial statements.
It worked for me at that job, but of course that's rather risky if you
really want the job.
