Personally, I have a problem with a potential employer
checking anything but work history and references, but
that's me. As far as allowing a company to perform a credit
check, the appropriate time is after you've interviewed,
at the same time that they want to check references. They
should only be performing these checks on people that they
actually are interested in offering a job. Where credit
checks are concerned, numerous credit checks can
negatively impact your credit score.
So, if you've interviewed at the company and want the job
and they want you and it's time to do the reference check,
ok, give 'em your SS# if you think it's a legitimate request,
but not before.
