IMO, that doesn't answer the OP's question, which was related to
whether to portray user action and system response as a dialogue.
Personally, I hope that the screen doesn't display because the thought
of inanimate objects engaging in mating rituals is too much :) In any
case, I have an uneasy feeling about using "display" as an
intransitive verb in a computing context.
FWIW, I've used both the OP's suggested methods and have a slight
preference to the latter. However, the important thing (IMO) is to
choose one convention and use that consistently.
