I agree emphatically with Cindy on this. Overall, PT helps immensely, but pushups were no part of mine, and anything that strains the wrists can be problematic and you should do this with advice from a trained professional. I am a big yoga fan, but there are a lot of postures that I have to modify because I cannot rest my body weight on my wrists for long. I use my elbows or locked fists rather than rest on my wrists. I ached for months because I tried to keep up with a new yoga teacher whose favorite "resting" position strained my wrists. My fault, and I learned my lesson.
"Pushups help immensely. So do repetitions with 5 pound bar
bells and various devices for improving hand strength. In all these cases,
the
point is build strength slowly through light repetitions. If you do 15
minutes a
day, within a few months, you probably won't be bothered by carpal tunnel
again."
With all due respect to Bruce, who is one of my favorite Techwr-l posters,
I'd like to point out that developing your own regimen isn't necessarily a
good idea. These exercises can make things worse or trigger another
flareup if you don't know what you're doing. I would still urge John to
see a physical therapist, who will be able to pinpoint the source of the
problem, provide exercises tailored to John's specific situation, and
monitor his pace so that he doesn't cause further injury.
