I wonder if it's just a coincidence that these sorts of complaints
always seem to come from writers who work in development
environments where the end product is software or other IP?
I don't recall ever hearing them coming from writers who are
documenting things that have to be CAD-designed, machined
and assembled on a factory floor; the people who develop
airplane engines, cars and toasters all seem to have a solid
grasp of what their products are supposed to do before they sit
down to figure out how it's going to work. And I've also never
had an experience as a user of such products where there was
not a set of user instructions, or where the people in the service
dept didn't have a repair manual on hand to consult when the
darned thing needed fixing.
