TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
> How many more years do you expect to be a tech writer
I don't usually post a response to the question-of-the-week, but this
one has really been sticking in my head. I hadn't ever really thought
of how long I would continue doing technical writing. I strongly
identify with what I do (I don't mind calling myself a technical
writer, just as I don't mind calling myself many other titles that
help define who I am, what my interests are, what I like to do, and
what I do well).
I guess my answer would be a combination of Other/None of the above
and Until a better career comes along. My "dream job" is to have the
title "technical writer/programmer." I want to spend some of my
workday writing content, and some of my day creating the stuff that I
document. I think that if I was able to wear both hats, I'd be able to
"mix it up" a bit more.
I realize that the title "tech writer/programmer" is probably going to
require that I work for very small companies and/or startups, but I
tend to work better in small company environments, anyway, so that's
probably not a bad thing for me. :-)
