I'm compiling a collection of case studies about technical writers who
contributed value to a client or an employer by going beyond our
traditional roles. The aim is to encourage innovation among technical
writers and provide models for them to follow. The project will include
panel presentation at the 2005 STC Annual Conference titled "Technical
Communicators Working in Nontraditional Roles: Success Stories."
The idea for the project was sparked at the last conference, where I
heard a lot of discussion about how the need for taking on new roles in
order to succeed and even survive as professionals. Jamie Conklin, in a
session on Cross-Functional Teams, carried this a bit further: he
remarked that some of us will encounter resistance, and some of us will
fail the first few times, when we try to reach beyond the traditional
boundaries of our jobs. That's why I think we need encouragement as
well as models to follow.
If you've been part of a success story in which you stepped out of the
traditional technical-writer role, please email me a brief summary of
what you did and how it added value for your client or your employer.
Thanks in advance.
