Good insights, Eric, and much appreciated. I agree with much of what you
say, but think my chances of coming in at the top of the scale are slim -
this is, after all, a government gig, where "that's the way we've always
done it" is a pretty deeply entrenched rationale.
They alluded that the person I'd be replacing had worked her way into the
upper portion of the scale, which was encouraging. Also, I was one of six
finalists chosen from the 160 who applied, another encouraging sign (and
another piece of artillery in my argument against an "average" salary).
But based on how highly they regard the person I'd be replacing, I bet
they'd NEVER give me more than they'd been giving her. She walks on water
in their eyes, a fact that makes the idea of replacing her a bit daunting.
At any rate, I like the way they've been leveling with me so far - they
were quite candid about both the good and the bad aspects of the job. And
they laughed at my jokes - a very important litmus test. We'll see if I
beat out the other five...
