Actually, Word 2002 acts this way, too--if you have not turned off track
formatting (Tools|Options|Edit|Keep Track of Formatting). If you have not,
and if you display the Styles & Formatting window, you'll see all
modifications made to any style.
The thing is, your usual and customary settings for a particular template
style have not been changed in the template unless you select the option to
make the style change to meet the paragraph in which you have placed the
insertion bar. The additionally displayed "styles" are unique to the
document in which you're working.
While I have thus far refused to move to Office 2003, I suspect you can hide
this obnoxious display by resetting the applicable option.
