I recently took a writing test, and was favorably impressed. It killed
two birds with one stone, really - the company is in technology X, which
is reasonably new and specialized. So the test was a three-day
assignment to research and write about a specific aspect of technology
X. It showed researching and writing abilities, and it taught the
prospective employees a little bit about technology X. I have no doubt
that the hiring managers took the time to "grade" the test. Frankly, I
think it's a very good idea, and if I ever get into a hiring position
I'll try to adopt it.
