So the test was a three-day assignment to research and write about a specific aspect of technology X.

Be careful with this concept. If it can be interpreted (or even misinterpreted) as a demand for three days of free work as the price of being considered for a position, it exposes the company to legal sanctions. If the company pays for the time, though, it's fine.
