However, there are at least two classes (e.g. 'stylesheets') that are
highly configurable - the memoir class and the koma-script. The
documentation for the first one is excellent and also includes some
theory about fine printing & typesetting.

It's a pity though that FM does neither feature a paragraph-based H&J
algorithm, nor hanging punctuation.

Btw, InDesign CS 2 was announced today, and it supports footnotes. This
will definitely make some people jump of joy (yes, including me).
