I would say LaTeX source files is one of the least 'fossil record of information'. Many scientific journals are typeset in LaTeX and many books that are updated frequently.

Well, Framemaker, InDesign, Ventura are not exactly 'authoring tools' either. Besides, you can use MS Word to write the documentation and save as LaTeX, using a plugin.
