Subject:Re: What should one do with split infinitives? From:David Neeley <dbneeley -at- gmail -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- techwr-l -dot- com> Date:Thu, 14 Apr 2005 21:10:41 -0500
Rahul,
Although infinitives are split as a practical matter, the most correct
form would be not to split them:
"Provide the definitions of all terms, acronyms, and abbreviations
required to interpret the SRS properly."
The "properly" could also go after interpret, but that is more awkward.
This is a rule more commonly honored in its breach, much like the rule
about not ending sentences with prepositions. Both seem to be
retreating relatively quickly from the living language.
