TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
<<Note to self: It's ok to denigrate administrative assistants here, but not
editors. (Ducks and runs from the hordes of irate admins lurking on the
list) :)>>
Well, I'm not an admin, but have known a bunch of them. Many I respected a
great deal. None of them were technical writers, or editors (although one
was excellent at all forms of grammar and business etiquette, easily the
best I've ever seen).
I don't think I was ever advocating that technical writers couldn't come
from being an admin. I took a very similar journey. I just have to say that
in the myriad of resumes, it's pretty rare to see it. And I just don't see
confusing the roles, or blending them. I may be over sensitive from years as
being the only female programmer in the department, but I wouldn't have been
any happier about being asked to inventory office supplies than I was about
being asked to type the other programmer's work because I'd learned
keyboarding and they hadn't. There should be a boundary, it seems to me. And
we each decide what that is, apparently. :)
