TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
<<Maybe they would. Are rates low because most people in this field write
crap or do most people in this field write crap because the rates are low?>>
I don't think these things are correlated. Nor do I think certification
proves much. There are a lot of project managers with certification that
can't successfully close out a project. In fact, from www.redgate.com there
is a statistic that 53% of all projects do not come in on time. Another 17%
couldn't even track whether the project had come in on time or not. This is
despite the fact that project managers typically make better rates than
non-managers.
Certification hasn't improved for project management (and it seems to have
little to do with capability). I don't see the benefit for technical
communications or technical communicators.
I it's fine for those who want it, or for those who feel safer see a
certification on a resume. I just do not see a correlation between
certification, results or salary.
