Another of the perennial questions that reappears on the list. I've voiced
VERY strong opinions on the matter of salary negotiation in the past, and
I still stand by them. I'm sure they're easily found with a search.

But I thought I'd add:

If the recruiter/HR person insists on a ballpark figure, I respond:
"Well, it's your budget that's the limiting factor. I'm undoubtedly far
more flexible than you policy is. What range were you looking to pay?"

or,

"One million." Dead pan, no emotion, wait for their reaction. When they
react, respond "Any sane person would want the most possible. Wouldn't
they?".

If anyone insists on salary history, insist on getting the salary history
of the position first.

But, I will in all seriousness move the discussion straight to hiring
policy, benefits, guarantees that I was the last remaining candidate, and
when I'd be starting if they insist salary is important at the early
stages.
