Although I generally agree with Lou's comments regarding privacy,
there are still some proper uses for knowing whether a message was
opened.
For example, if you work in a regulated industry (and most are today,
with SOX compliance issues!), and if you want to be sure that
signficant legal compliance issues are received by everyone, this may
be an appropriate thing to know. This may be especially true in those
cases that someone is a teleworker, for example, for whom email is a
regular part of their conduct of business. Since most corporations
must now keep archives of email for what may be an indefinite period
of years, it may also be a reasonable legal strategy to be sure that
policy announcements or other significant information is actually
distributed to all employees.
Although I haven't seen it recently, IIRC the Eudora mail client was
able to set mail in such a way that the sender could know if the
message was received and opened...much like snail mail's certified or
registered mail. Whether one can consider that "NOT ETHICAL" on its
face I seriously doubt.
