I would like to mention that extensions came  before Microsoft (I think)

If I remember rightly, AT&T (Bell Labs,  BellCore) in implementing UNIX 
established some early 'practices' of  standardization.

In UNIX, and the "C" programming language, (circa the  '70's) there are a 
number of 'standard' extensions.

To name several   ( believe the translations are correct):

doc  c,               (Code)
dot  h,                (Heading)
dot s, dot src   (Source)
dot  obj             (Object)
dot  bin             (Binary)
