Were these sales people young?  The reason I ask is that here in the UK
a local DIY store made a big thing in their recruitment of staff about
age - they were specifically more than happy to employ people aged 50+.
And the reason they gave? Older people came from a background where
politeness etc was common so they interacted better with customers.
Ageism in reverse :-)
