Biggest mistake I ever made was at a good-sized technology company where
I was a senior writer. Being a helpful individual, and someone who could
figure out technology pretty quickly, I once stepped in to operate the
company's busy switchboard (back in the days when there was such a
thing) during the HOUR it took for a temp to show up. Really bad idea.
They never really saw me as anything other than a switchboard operator
after that. That short stint completely destroyed my credibility as a
technical professional. Lesson learned.
