Beth's experience suddenly reminded me of many, many years when I worked for
Ph*&^ps. I was using a VAX-based word processor (Lex11) that was in Dutch. I didn't like
the user interface and discovered how to hack it all back to English again. While doing
that, I discovered that there was a Telex interface, so I hacked that and worked out how
to use it. Big mistake ... when the engineers discovered that they could ask me to send
telexes instead of dragging over to the main admin office I found I had acquired a new
role (fortunately in addition to being the tech writer).
It was at that same company that we decided to market a french furnace. Problem was,
all the documentation was in French. No problem, I said, I speak French (one of my
degrees is in French lit) and so I went to France, talked to the manufacturer, translated
the information and wrote the documentation in English. When the machine started
selling, of course users needed training ... and who knew the equipment better than me?
so ... and then the machine needed installation and support ... and who knew the
equipment better than me? ...
Simon North.
