One idea:

Check out www.abiword.com and www.openoffice.org.

Abiword and OpenOffice can open Word documents, and save documents in
Word format, and just may be less fragile than Word itself.

They're GPL (free) and available in binary format.

It'll cost you about an hour or so to install and try both of them,
but it just may save you a lot of time in the long run.
