Tom J. has a very good point about learning a new skill while you're in
"down" time. I've done that myself.
And it certainly doesn't hurt to be able go into an interview and say
that while you've been off, you've learned XXXXX new skill/s. Shows
that you're self-motivated, a go-getter, not afraid to try something
new, able to adjust in adverse conditions, etc.
