I have a shortage of current writing samples, partly because of having
worked for Government and security firms that have no interest in
giving me copies to take away.
The beauty of the public domain texts is that you're showcasing what
you can do with existing content. In fact, you could spin out an MS
Word, a WordPerfect, and a Frame version, showing how you handled
various tasks.
