I'll admit it, some things bug me (like 's for pluralizing and "unravel" and "unthaw"), but I'm developing an acceptance and maybe an appreciation of misusages. Rather than looking at people as uneducated, I'm starting to see these misusages as an extension of the speaker's/writer's personality and their background rather than education or capability. Some of our most expressive language comes from non-standard usage and from our changing culture. Lashing out against the offenders seems like trying to hold back the tide. So, I'll do my best to communicate clearly and teach those under my influence to do the same. As for the infidels, I'll learn to live with the way a friend says "Heimrick maneuver." His dad, an EMT instructor, says it the same way. He can't say it right, but I hope he's around if I'm choking.
To put a different perspective on an old proverb (junk/treasure): One person's pet peeve is another person's personality.
Then there's the governor of our state who made the following proclamation yesterday, "...making students more better prepared," when talking about an education initiative.
Happy Friday everyone!
