When I was in college in the early 80s, I fooled with my school-given
computer account a bit more than a bit, to print papers, play games, and
learn about computers. I used a kind of e-mail (probably 1200 baud) to
connect with a friend's computer account (with his permission) at another
school, just to see if I could. Before then I was a ham radio operator and
became acquainted with the long-distance communication of that medium. What
is the baud rate of radio? It's probably something that can be very high. I
read an article once many years ago about this, but I don't remember the
details. Jim Jones http://tinyurl.com/4arjc

How about "chat"? Back in 1978 I was sending messages to Europe and
getting responses. It was amazing and incredibly fast -- 1200 baud!
